A Review of Mussar in Recovery

With this book Hannah L. and Rabbi Winokur have introduced to the recovery world a Jewish spiritual path that is workable and valid for those of any religion, and even for those who subscribe to no religion. The authors acknowledge that the twelve-step programs have great value, and much of the meat of the book explains how the path of Mussar and the path of the twelve steps complement each other. Taken together, they can provide the necessary direction and tools to navigate the heroic journey of recovery successfully. They make it clear that recovery is not simply abstinence, but a transformative process that leads to joy and serenity.
I particularly like the way in which Mussar provides guidance for self-examination. Instead of talking about “defects of character,” this program talks about specific “soul traits,” such as humility, courage, patience, gratitude, kindness, and compassion. The emphasis is on balance, not perfection. Within Mussar one has the opportunity to participate in group discussions as well as to spend individual time in self-examination and prayer. Some groups may be led by a rabbi, but many groups are supported by a lay leader. A fundamental principle underlying Mussar is that we are all given our souls and lives by a loving God, and that it is both our responsibility and our joy to advance our souls to the highest level that we are able.
The author, ably guided by Rabbi Winokur, has put tremendous effort into the production of Mussar in Recovery. It is on my bookshelf, and I do recommend it to all serious students of recovery and all who travel the heroic journey of recovery, whether as an addict or as a family member affected by the addiction of a loved one.
