Dr. Gordon Returns to Clearfork Academy: The Heroic Journey of Family Recovery

Posted on February 23, 2026, tagged as Addiction Recovery, Alcoholics Anonymous, Heroic Journey, Twelve Steps

Dr. Gordon was recently invited to return to Clearfork Academy for another virtual session with their family recovery group.

On February 17, he spoke to parents and family members about viewing addiction – and family recovery – as a heroic journey, one that can be faced successfully with hope, courage, and the right kind of support.

During the session, Dr. Gordon walked the group through the stages of the heroic journey and emphasized an important truth:

  • Their troubled adolescents are engaged in a heroic struggle.

  • But so are they.

Parents and family members, he explained, are not bystanders in the recovery story — they are participants. Their courage, endurance, and willingness to grow are just as real and just as heroic. The session was well attended, and the discussion following his remarks was lively and engaged. Dr. Gordon expressed appreciation to Clearfork Academy and family recovery counselor Mike Carter for the invitation. He also noted that although Clearfork Academy is a Christ-centered program, his message was spiritual in nature without containing specifically Christian content.

As he often reminds audiences: Be the hero of your own story.
